How To: Meet With Your Member Of Congress

An in-person meeting with your Member of Congress (MOC) or their staff is one of the single most effective tools that you, as a constituent and advocate, have to make your voice heard and influence elected officials on the issues you care about. Follow this guide to learn more about meeting with your member of Congress.

BEST PRACTICES TO CONSIDER:

Be sure to get a photo with the staffer or Member and send it to your Manager of College Organizing!

Tell your story. Explain why you care about the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease and talk about the work you’ve done with ONE on campus. Give a voice to the world’s poorest. Members of Congress and their staff love to hear why you care about these issues.

Send your photo with the Member/staffer to your University Relations office or student newspaper! Universities love to see that their students are politically involved, and this will give your chapter more media coverage.

SETTING UP YOUR MEETING

REACH OUT TO YOUR ONE CAMPUS MANAGER and let us know you’d like to set up a meeting with your MOC. This is the most important step in the process because we will provide helpful instructions.

DETERMINE WHERE TO GO by using www.house.gov and www.senate.gov to find your representatives and senators.

CALL THE OFFICE to find out the best method to set up a meeting. Each office has its own policies.

WHEN YOU ARE CONNECTED TO THE OFFICE SAY:
Hello, my name is ______, and I am a constituent in (city, state). I would like to set up a meeting with Senator/Representative and I am calling to find out the best way to submit a meeting request.

Occasionally, an office will allow you to request a meeting via phone, but often they ill want to request in writing, via fax, email or a letter. See below for a sample meeting request letter.
